CM Mamata Banerjee meets GJM Chief Bimal Gurung in Darjeeling

Darjeeling : A day after the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) leadership got a breather from a city court in connection with a pending arrest warrant, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday met GJM president Bimal Gurung in Darjeeling hills. Following his meeting with Ms Banerjee, Mr Gurung said that the meeting was successful like never before. Apart from Mr Gurung, other leaders of the party including three MLAs of the hills were present in the meeting with Ms Banerjee and other officials of the State government. “We also discussed the present situation in the hills,” Mr Gurung said. According to the GJM leadership, the discussion was mainly centred on development issues including improving sanitation and sewerage in the hills.

Though this is not the first time Ms Banerjee is meeting the GJM leadership during her visit to the hills, it comes in the backdrop of recent developments. Though the Calcutta High Court extended a stay on the arrest warrant issued to GJM leadership in connection with the murder of Akhil Bharatiya Gorkha League (ABGL) leader Madan Tamang, the outcome of the case may decide the future course of politics in the hills. The meeting between GJM leadership and the Chief Minister did not go down well with the Akhil Bharatiya Gorkha League (ABGL) leadership. “We wanted to meet Ms Banerjee, but we are in dilemma after she met Bimal Gurung,” Pratap Khati, general secretary of ABGL leadership said.
