Two days workshop on organic animal husbandry held in Gangtok

Gangtok : Department of Animal Husbandry, Livestock, Fisheries and Veterinary Service organized two days long workshop on Organic Animal Husbandry at conference hall of Namgyal Institute of Tibetlogy, Deorali here. The Speaker of Sikkim Legislative Assembly, K.N Rai graced the occasion as chief guest, accompanied by Minister of Agriculture and Horticulture and Animal Husbandry, Somnath Poudyal. Addressing the inaugural session of the workshop, Speaker, Mr. Rai said “there is no doubt that by next year 2015, Sikkim will be declared as fully organic state where 50,000 hector land will be organically certified. Till no 26, 000 hector lands have already certified and we have to shoulder to achieve rest by 2015, adding that there is diverge and doubling challenges in the process but we have support for noble cause for the state. The Organic Mission is not only for the government and department but it is for each and every one of us”. 

Speaker, Mr. Rai mentioned that in 2003, Chief Minister, Pawan Chamling brought the resolution to convert the entire state into organic state in the state assembly. Mr. Rai informed the gathering that Cuba would always been known as the first in the world to have adopted organic farming. Cuba resorted organic farming practices as a compulsion due to long standing trade embargo with other nations. Earlier, Minister of Agriculture and Horticulture and Animal Husbandry, Somnath Poudyal said “Sikkim is achieving towards goal and no one can stop to achieve Sikkim as Organic State by 2015. Though it is a challenge to us but I’m confident by 2015 we achieve the goal and in between we may face some obstacles but if we stand together and cooperate and support for noble cause than reality will appear in front of us without any delay. 

People realized the organic movement in Sikkim and it is globally accepted now and our focus is on marketing, awareness, integrated farming and others which will be benefited to everyone in the state. I’m sure and hope that our stakeholder will take more positively on organic venture in state.” Minister reiterated the Prime Minister, Modi’s praises Sikkim’s Organic Mission in India and abroad. Four eminent resource person; Dr. Rangnekar D.V from Ahmedabad, Dr. P. K Pathak, Kolkata, Sanjay Agarwal from Dehradun and P Venkata Ramanya, Hyderabad will enlighten the farmers in two days workshop. The Secretaries of different departments, Chairman of various boards, officers and staffs of Animal Husbandry, Livestock, Fisheries and Veterinary Service and farmers from the entire fours district were present.
