RN Chamling clean sweeps Rangang-Yangang by-election

Gangtok : The result of the much anticipated by-election in Rangang-Yangang constituency, south Sikkim today witnessed the victory of independent candidate Rup Narayan Chamling who polled 4,788 votes. Voting had been held on September 13 with the contestants numbering five in all. SDF candidate Kumari Mangar secured 4,080 votes, the BJP’s Bikash Basnet received 352 votes, Congress candidate Bishnu Prasad Adhikari could muster just 28 votes, independent candidate Sancha Raj Subba got 28 votes, while the NOTA button recorded 46 hits. “This isn’t my victory, it is the people's,” said Rup Narayan Chamling after the results were announced. “We will now work together for the welfare of Rangang-Yangang.” The ruling SDF party had put to use all its machinery to ensure Kumari Mangar’s victory, but the efforts failed to pay off. A spokesperson for the party said the SDF accepts and welcomes the people's mandate, adding although the party candidate lost, the SDF has won in principle. The Sikkim National People's Party also welcomed the results of the by-election and congratulated Rup Narayan Chamling. It thanked the people for rejecting national-level party candidates.
