SKM meeting in Capital to play constructive role

Gangtok : Sikkim Krantikari Morcha held a meeting of its central executive committee at the party headquarters in Tadong under the stewardship of chief PS Golay. Besides the CEC members, representatives of the party from the district and zonal levels were also present at the occasion. Discussions were mainly focused on the SKM’s performance in the recently held Assembly polls in the state including the party’s achievements and shortcomings, informed SKM publicity secretary Jacob Khaling through a press release. While submitting a report on the SKM’s performance in the West District, Birbal Subba, the party’s district vice-president conceded the party could not fare well from his region given the paucity of time and inconsistency in maintaining regular interactions with the people. He claimed most of the residents of the West District were keen for a change in government, but they could not support the SKM openly due to pressure from the ruling dispensation as well as the various sops the latter offered to lure voters.

The SKM failed to wrest a seat in the West District but the vote percentage it garnered was satisfactory, added Subba. Meanwhile, South District SKM vice-president Bhoj Raj Rai said the SDF may have won the Assembly election, but his party has won the hearts of the general public. He asserted that of the 55 per cent votes won by the ruling front from his district, 20-30 per cent was secured by sheer muscle and money power. Agreeing with Rai, East District SKM vice-president TN Dhakal said the party has entered into a growth trajectory from where the only outcome will be its victory. Despite the muscle flexing and money power of the SDF, the SKM has achieved a milestone by winning 10 Assembly seats and this fact augurs well for the party, he added. Addressing the gathering, SKM president PS Golay expressed deep gratitude towards all supporters for staying united and rallying behind the party.

He said the party does not see poll results as the end of things, but its chief objective is to serve the common man and fight for his rights. “I had clearly stated during the campaigning period that if the public votes the SKM to power, we would form a government of the people and for the people, and if the party were to occupy the opposition bench we would play a constructive role and always keep the treasury benches on their toes,” said the SKM chief. Golay added the people of Sikkim have given the SKM an opportunity to serve them as the party has 10 representatives in the state Assembly now as opposition members compared to none earlier. He further said the party will always remain alert and vigilant and never allow the ruling front to take decisions that are against the welfare of the state and its citizens. (
