GNLF cries foul at arrests of ‘innocent’ people

KURSEONG : The Gorkha National Liberation Front submitted deputations to various police stations across the hills taking note of the arrest of innocent people on the pretext of post-poll violence. Copies of the deputation have also been forwarded to the state Human Rights Commission chairman, North Bengal IG, Darjeeling SP and the district magistrate. Talking to reporters, Kurseong branch GNLF spokesperson Daya Dewan said his party has submitted deputations to police stations across the hills demanding immediate action against the random arrests of people ever since the conclusion of the general election.

He said many innocent individuals, especially GNLF supporters, who were not at all involved in any sort of violence, have been arrested and non-bailable charges slapped on them. Most of those arrested are daily wage labourers, added the GNLF leader. He said the party wants serious action from the administration to put a stop to the injustice being meted out on innocent people. Post poll violence has been reported from Jogmaya Tea estate and Sonada following which several innocent people have been arrested.
