Social worker from Kurseong Prem Pradhan passes away

Kurseong : Prem Pradhan, a renowned figure and senior social worker from the Kurseong region, is no more. He passed away yesterday aged 66. Born on May 27, 1948, Prem Pradhan was a renowned social and an educational figure in Kurseong. During his lifetime, he contributed immensely for the welfare of society, mainly as a representative of the Gorkha Jan Pustakaly. He had also launched various initiatives for the benefit of society, especially children. The Gorkha Jan Pustakalaya of Kurseong is the oldest organisation of the Indian Gorkha community and was established as far back as 1913. Pradhan was a lifetime member of the library. His association with the organisation had completed 50 years this year and he was due to be felicitated on its foundation day on June 8. Besides his contributions to the Pustakalay, Pradhan also played an important role as secretary of the Shalig Nirman Samiti, an organisation to upkeep the Bhanu Udhyan, located near the All India Radio Station of Kurseong.

By occupation, Pradhan was a teacher with Pushparani Roy Memorial Higher Secondary School and had retired from service in 2008 after a long and dedicated association. GJP secretary Prakash Pradhan noted the untimely demise of Prem Pradhan is a huge loss for the organisation. Pradhan’s contribution to the GJP is immeasurable and his memory will always remain alive as long as the GJP exists, he said. Pradhan’s body will be kept at the GJP from 12:30pm to 1:00pm Friday for well-wishers to pay their last respects after which it will be taken to the cremation ground. Prem Pradhan reportedly breathed his last around 11am today at the Kurseong sub-divisional hospital after being admitted earlier in the morning. He was a diabetic. He has left behind his wife, a son and two daughters.
