9th Sikkim State Legislative Assembly commences

Gangtok : The first session of the ninth Sikkim Legislative Assembly today commenced with the newly-elected members taking the oath of affirmation. Pro-tem Speaker Sonam Gyatso Lepcha administered the oath on Chief Minister Pawan Chamling and 30 other legislators took oath, while Mechung Bhutia, the SKM MLA from Martam-Rumtek constituency, remained absent. Meanwhile, KN Rai was elected the Speaker of the ninth SLA. In his vote of thanks, the chief minister, also the leader of the House, urged all the legislators to respect the mandate of the people of the state and work towards safeguarding Sikkim’s peaceful and tranquil environment in order to usher it on the path of prosperity. “We should all rise above our personal agendas and work for the state of Sikkim and its people and ensure they flourish,” urged Chamling. He appealed to the Opposition to play its role in the right spirit and always strive to work for the good of the state and its subjects. The SDF government has always been very sensitive regarding the development of the state and its people and all members of the House should work with this objective in mind, said the chief minister. He also used the occasion to announce his government’s support to the NDA government at the Centre and congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his thumping win in the general election.
